Pikler® changing table

A table surrounded on three sides with a frame; with a wipeable mattress

The purpose of establishing the proper dimensions of the Pikler® nappy-changing table is not only that the infant can fit comfortably during the care situation, but also that he can freely move around. The bars that frame the table provide safety for the child whilst also allowing the caregiver to stay relaxed. They create a boundary, but at the same time also provide a clear space for the child to move in. They offer a secure framework for the child to participate in the nappy change or dressing process in the position he chooses for himself. However, the child cannot be left unsupervised, even on the Pikler nappy-changing table!

We consider it important that using the table is comfortable for the adult too. According to our experience, this will usually be possible if they can reach the child on the table without the need to stretch or bend, can see his face well and make eye contact.

When and how we recommend it

The nappy-changing table can be used from birth. The height of the barred fence framing three sides of the table varies according to the child’s age and stage of motor development: for young infants the low frame is enough, whereas for children who already come up to vertical positions or kneel up, the higher bars – reaching to about chest-height of the child – are recommended, so that a child seeking to find his balance may hold on to them. In a childcare setting it is good to have interchangeable bars, but for using it at home it is enough to purchase the higher bars.

It is recommended to place a mattress that matches the dimensions of the diaper changing table, which is not soft and does not give in under the child’s weight, covered with so-called medical canvas which has a more pleasant touch than the child’s skin having to come in direct contact with the wooden base. In a community setting it is easy to wipe off with a disinfectant solution after taking care of each child, and a clean textile cover can be used on top.

As the nappy-changing table may not have its own legs, it must be securely attached to whatever piece of furniture it is used on. Placing it onto a cabinet used for storing all the necessary accessories for the care situation is recommended.
